Moisturizers…The Myth…The Truth
Most moisturizers containing the typical main actives, including water or lanolin, will not
be very effective in reducing wrinkles and age lines because of several factors related to
their formulation and the nature of the skin barrier:
- Molecular Size and Structure: Many active ingredients in moisturizers, such as
hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, have very large molecular sizes. These
molecules may struggle to penetrate deeply into the dermis where wrinkles
originate due to the skin's natural barrier, which consists of lipids and proteins
tightly packed together.
- Hydrophilic vs. Lipophilic Properties: The skin barrier is primarily composed of
lipids, making it more permeable to lipophilic (oil-loving) molecules rather than
hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules. While humectants like glycerin can attract
water to the skin's surface, their ability to penetrate deep into the dermis is very
limited.
- Moisturizers Formulation: Almost all moisturizers are formulated with a high
water content and emollients such as lanolin or mineral oil, which can create a
barrier on the skin's surface rather than penetrating deeply. While these
ingredients can provide temporary hydration and softening of the skin, they will
not effectively target deeper wrinkles and age lines.
- Need for Penetration Enhancers: To overcome the skin barrier and improve the
penetration of active ingredients, specialized formulations patented by Quantum
Facial™ incorporating penetration enhancers or carrier systems are necessary.
Our enhancers include nanotechnology, liposomes, or micelles, which
encapsulate ingredients and facilitate their delivery into deeper layers of the skin.
- Limited Efficacy Over Time: Even if active ingredients manage to penetrate into
the dermis, their efficacy in reducing wrinkles and age lines is severely limited
because they are not present in sufficient concentrations or if the formulation
lacks stability or bioavailability
Quantum Facial proprietary nanotechnology dramatically enhances the bioavailability
and efficacy of active ingredients, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin and
exert their anti-aging effects more effectively. These innovations help overcome the
limitations of traditional moisturizers, offering more targeted and transformative skincare
solutions.
